ArcelorMittal resumes operations at Romanian steel plant

On May 3rd, ArcelorMittal, the largest steelmaker in the world, decided to restart its electrical steelmaking and laminate sections operations at the Hunedoara steel plant in Romania.

Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and weak market demand, the steel mill’s operation was suspended on April 1st, but the company will now restart with taking all preventive measures at the plant.

The factory has about 640 employees. The local trade union said that because the government provided insufficient technical unemployment subsidies (75% of the employee’s wages), so they will negotiate with ArcelorMittal to compensate for the salary of employees who were unable to work due to the impact of the shutdown.
